What makes Sridevi to stand out from the other actresses was her matchless comedy , probably one thing that you really miss with the current Bollywood actresses. The current Bollywood actresses may be rich with exuberance, acting , dancing but no one currently has the ability to make you smile, let alone giggle. When Sridevi moved out of movies she had a already a left a vacuum and now that shes no more that vacuum will remain as it was.
Growing up in the 90s meant there was no escaping the charm of Sridevi. May be the place were I was born also played an important. I belong to the northern part of Kerala where the Regional Malayalam Doordarshan was out of reach and we had to get satisfied with Hindi broadcast. That meant we got numerous opportunity to watch Sridevi’s on the tv screen. Some of the movies that stand out for me is Mr. India, Chaalbaaz, Laadla , Sadma & English Vinglish.
Mr. India was indeed an Anil Kapoor movie but what added to the spice to the movie was Sridevi’s ” Hawa Hawayi” and her inimitable comic timings. The song with the kids and her fighting for the ball is the best comic song I have seen and I can still sing that song line by line. Chaalbaaz was equally hilarious with Sridevi playing the double role. And when you thought that Sridevi was too humorous, movie Laadla showed how serious she could became. With her signature dialogue, “Understand? You better understand,” Sridevi was her fiery best against Anil Kapoor . Sadma was a class and the role that she played as a woman with amnesia was both endearing and heartwarming. Her child-like innocence and bright, shiny eyes in the movie was unforgettable. English Vinglish perhaps require no detailing.
Sridevi’s comedy was not slapstick but was using her tiny mannerisms like an eyeroll, a contorted face, or a high-pitched giggle. She had the eerie knack to produce laughs from nowhere. She was undisputably the Bollywood’s first heroine-comedienne. Thank you for the laughs Sridevi. Your movies still makes me giggle.
If you have watched the Christopher Nolan movie “Dunkirk” and you were still wondering what is this fuss all about, may be when you watch “Darkest Hours” it will start making sense. The Dunkirk evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, and also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, was the evacuation of Allied soldiers during World War II from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, in the north of France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940. This evacuation was critical for Winston Churchill ,who was the then Prime Minister of United Kingdom , as without these soldiers it would have been impossible for him to hold against the German force. This movie brings up on the political side of Dunkirk.
When I watched this movie I felt like I was watching Winston Churchill onscreen. The greatest orator that he was , the movie is filled with his inspirational speeches. You defy the statement when one of his minister says “Wars cannot be won by speeches”. Winston Churchill is considered one of the defining figures of the 20th century and this movie is thrilling, somber, introspective, gregarious and reflects Churchill’s demeanor in brilliant fashion.
A must watch.
The only reason I chose to watch this movie was for the soothing and soulful song of Amit Mishra “Meer-e- Karwaan”. The song was running in a loop in my laptop for almost a week. Lucknow Central has its flaws but when the movie keeps you engaged with its music, rib tickling comedy and punch dialogues you hardly notice those flaws. Farhan Akthar carries the movie on his shoulders along with his other jail inmate gives a superb performance. Ravi Kissan with ludicrous acting and Ronit Roy as the strict Jailor adds spice to the movie.
Overall this is a must watch and laughs are guaranteed.
PS (Taken from DNA) : The movie is based on true story of a band formed by the inmates of Lucknow Central jail. The band named ‘Healing Hearts’ was formed in the Adarsh Jail wing of Lucknow Central jail. Consisting of 12 men who are sentenced to life imprisonment, the band plays hit Bollywood numbers at various private functions including weddings and baraats. The band was the brainchild of VK Jain, the senior superintendent of Lucknow Central Jail, as a part of qaidi reforms in 2007. Just like the film, a contest was held in the jail for which funds were released. With the arrangement of fifteen instruments, few volunteers came forward for the initiative. An inmate who hailed from a musically inclined family provided leadership due to which the band won the contest. The win further opened doors to opportunities for the band to perform at private parties.
It is for sure that the movie couldn’t had any other name better than ” Baahubali” because your adrenaline is sure to raise each time the name is called on. And when Prabhas presents the character in a grand demeanor you just cant stop applauding. Each frame is a class and you might easily forgive that the primal question, to why Kattappa killed Baahubali, had an unconvincing answer . For the first time I saw a Telugu movie been watched by people from across the country. The guy who was sitting next to me a was a Bengali.
Was surprised to see opening scene song sung by Daler Mehendi. M.M. Kreem make sure that the background music blends with the storyline. With his alchemic touch SS Rajamouli perhaps will now fall into the league of Alejandro Inarrite or a James Cameron . It is difficult to convey the feelings or the experience into words but this will be a movie that will remain in the list of best movie ever made. If Baahubali: The Beginning was a sumptuous appetizer this will be a main course with a scrumptious dessert.
Disclaimer : Don’t watch this movie on empty stomach and if you are strictly a vegetarian I recommend you to definitely avoid this movie. Just Kidding…
If “Salt & Pepper” had some mouth watering scenes, this would be a treat for those pork and beef lovers because such is the way some delicacies are shown in the movie.Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Angamaly Diaries takes a risk by showcasing 86 new faces and trust me, none of them will disappoint you. There are some characters that you will definitely take home especially characters like Pepe, Police officer Shahul Hameed, U Clamp Raju, Pork Varkey, 10 ml Thomas, Lichi (you wish you could see more of her) , Bheeman , Maramkothi. Antony Varghese who plays the protagonist Pepe is a good find. He eases into the character comfortably with remarkable good looks.
Worth mentioning that the writer of this movie is none other than the talented Chemban Vinod Jose .With a superb blend of action , you’re-watching-life-as-it-happens narrative, colloquial slang, foodie metaphors, Prashant Pillai’s musical ballads , comic overtone, highly convincing performance , Angamaly Diaries will be perhaps is one of the best movies so far in 2017. It has already set certain yardsticks and gives an assurance that malayalam movie is in safe hands.
If you have come out of theater without having any goosebumps or a tickle in your eyes or a desire to topple somebody in the air , as how Geeta and Babita does in the movie, then perhaps you have not enjoyed the movie. Dangal definitely is going to one among the best movies of 2016. The performances of the girls was a treat to watch and so was their cousin who is the funny-bone-cum-sutradhar of the movie. Dangal is a remarkable flick peppered with some nice humour, punch dialogues , nail-biting wrestling sequences , smashing performance of the girls , wonderful writing and editing , Daler Mahendi‘s vibrant title track ,Amir’s near to perfection acting and Nitesh Tiwari’s excellent direction.
Damn the demonetization, watch Dangal.
